Sahel Region | Evaluation of the Afri'Kibaaru Project | Media and Citizenship

The Afri’Kibaaru project, led by FMM and CFI, aims to promote the production and dissemination of content in local languages, while supporting the training and capacity building of journalists and media outlets in the Greater Sahel region. The main objective: to improve access to reliable, community-based information in a complex regional context.

The TDS team was commissioned to conduct a comprehensive evaluation focused on:

  • The extent to which the project’s initial objectives were achieved
  • The short- and medium-term results obtained
  • Observable effects on direct beneficiaries: journalists, coaches, local radio stations
  • The project’s overall impact on the local media ecosystem
  • Strategic and operational recommendations for the continuation and enhancement of activities in Afri’Kibaaru 2

Methodology

TDS Group adopted a cross-cutting approach that included:

  • In-depth qualitative data collection in several Sahel countries: Mali, Niger, Mauritania, Chad
  • Targeted interviews with all project stakeholders: beneficiaries, experts, trainers
  • Contextual analysis to tailor recommendations to local realities

Key findings

The evaluation highlighted several strengths of the project, notably its direct impact on the professionalisation of local media actors and the improved quality of produced content. Thanks to TDS’s regional expert network, several concrete recommendations were made to amplify results while strengthening the sustainability of the initiatives undertaken.
